Pau d'Arco is gemaakt van de schors van een grote tropische boom, genaamd de Roze Lapacho, gevonden in de regenwouden van de Amazone, Zuid-Amerika en Latijns-Amerika. Het heeft een lange geschiedenis van gebruik voor een aantal gezondheidsproblemen.
De binnenkant van de schors is het meest geliefde deel van de boom. Het bevat twee waardevolle stoffen genaamd lapacholen beta-lapachone.
