Zeaxanthin vs Lutein: Differences, Benefits & Dosage (2026) - Topvitamine
Sep 10, 2026
Lutein and zeaxanthin are related xanthophyll carotenoids that concentrate in the macula, where they filter damaging blue light and act as antioxidants, but they are not interchangeable. Lutein dominates the peripheral retina while zeaxanthin concentrates in the fovea, the center of sharpest vision, so each protects a different zone of the eye. Diets typically supply far more lutein than zeaxanthin, making zeaxanthin the more common shortfall. Clinical evidence, including AREDS2's 10 mg lutein and 2 mg zeaxanthin formula, supports taking them together rather than choosing one over the other.
